Academy Dominates at Munster u15 Closed
Amond Coaching Academy players had a very good outing at the Munster u15 Closed in the University of Limerick. Members from the West Waterford Cell had a fantastic weekend contesting all 5 finals, taking gold in all but 1 event. Academy members also managed to pick up silver in both boys and girls singles and girls doubles to boot.
Rachel O'Flynn got the ball rolling for the Academy picking up the girls singles title. The number 1 seed was in impressive form taking the title without dropping a single set. En route to the title Rachel faced stiff competition beating no less than 3 Academy members, Molly Keneally in the 1/4 final, Sibhe Collins in the 1/2 final and Kate Ahern in the final.
Rachel teamed up with Sibhe Collins in the girls doubles but the number 1 seeds had to settle for silver. Academy member and number 2 seed Kate Ahern teamed up with partner Lil Howard Murphy and was keen to upgrade her silver picked up in the girls singles decider. In a tight contest Kate won the bragging rights over her team mates to make it 2 from 2 for Academy Players.
Sibhe Collins and Tomas Ahern lived up to their seeding as the number 1 ranked pair by winning the mixed doubles event in emphatic style. The Academy pair swept the opposition aside winning all 4 rounds in straight sets and made it 3 from 3 for the West Waterford Academy Cell.
Tomas won his second title of the day when he teamed up with Jack Hickey for the boys doubles event. Again the number 1 seeds Tomas didn't let the pressure get to him and the pair dominated the boys doubles division, winning all rounds in straight sets. Even more impressively the boys managed to limit all their opponents on the day to single figures in each and every set.
Tomas picked up his third medal of the day in the Boys Singles. Unfortunately for Tomas he had to settle for silver against as a gallant effort fell at the final hurdle against an impressive Jack Hickey, who lived up to his number 1 seeding taking the title.
Also in action at the weekend was members from the Academy Development Squad. Ben Rooney was runner up in both the u11 Boys Singles and U11 Mixed Doubles before winning gold in the Boys Doubles and Sinead Brannagh was runner up in the Division 2 girls doubles. Oisin Hannigan lost a tough opening game of the U15 boys singles event but managed to regroup and secure a gold in the u15 Div 1 consolation.
There is a massive effort all round from both the Academy and Development squads and the work that all players are putting is evident in the result achieved at this event. Keep up the good work guys.
